In looking through and scanning some of the old pictures, I found this postcard showing a Santa Fe train after having crossed into Iowa over the Santa Swing Bridge heading for the depot at Ft. Madison.

The back of the card. |
This picture shows a train crossing on the underside of the bridge. And above is where the autos crossed, passing by the toll booth which a few years ago cost $1.00 for autos entering Illinois and no charge for those heading into Iowa. The swing section of the bridge is 525 feet long, one of the longest in the world. If you go to

My brother-in-law just recently posted a photo of a swing bridge in or near Seattle. I'd never heard of them nor seen one. I'm assuming the river is the Mississippi, and that the swing bridge accommodates barge and ship traffic.
ReplyDeleteI should have said that it does cross the Mississippi between Niota, Illinois, and Ft. Madison. And, yes, it does let the boats and shipping traffic go through. My mother-in-law's second husband took the tolls on the bridge for sometime before he retired.
ReplyDeleteI believe there is still a swing bridge that allows the trains to cross from the mainland to Galveston Island. I love trains! Happy PFF!
ReplyDeleteBridges and trains, the perfect combination. I've never seen a double deck bridge like that, fascinating.
ReplyDeleteHahaa...my husband thinks this postcard is pretty snazzy! lol Happy PFF!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fascinating bridge! I've never seen anything like that before.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I love trains too. Great card.
